Care, communication, and safety information

This page explains important practice information for people considering or receiving counselling through 4 Bears Counselling. It is general information about the practice and is not legal advice.

Scope of practice

Counselling is provided within the practitioner’s professional scope of practice as a Registered Social Worker in Ontario. Support is collaborative, trauma-informed, and tailored to your goals; it does not replace medical care, emergency services, or specialized services that may be more appropriate for your needs.

Information on this website is educational and is not a diagnosis, treatment plan, or guarantee of a particular outcome. If you are unsure whether this practice is a fit, you are welcome to request a consultation.

Virtual and phone care

Virtual and phone sessions can make counselling more accessible, but they have limits. A private location, reliable technology, and an emergency contact or location plan may be important to safe virtual care.

Virtual care may not be suitable in every situation. During consultation or ongoing care, options, risks, privacy considerations, and any recommended next steps can be discussed together.

Consultation and ongoing care

A consultation inquiry is a first conversation about availability, fit, and possible next steps. Sending an inquiry or participating in a consultation does not create a therapeutic relationship and does not confirm an appointment.

Ongoing care begins only after an appointment is arranged and informed-consent conversations have taken place.

Informed consent

Before counselling begins, you will have an opportunity to discuss the nature of services, fees, communication preferences, privacy, virtual-care considerations, cancellation expectations, and your questions. You can ask for clarification and take part in decisions about your care.

Consent is an ongoing process. You may raise concerns, revisit goals, or discuss alternatives as care continues.

Privacy and confidentiality

Counselling information is handled with care and in accordance with applicable professional and legal responsibilities. Details about website inquiries, chat messages, and contact methods are described in the Privacy Policy.

Confidentiality has limits. Information may need to be shared when required or permitted by law or professional obligations, including where there is a serious and immediate safety concern, suspected child abuse or neglect, or a legal requirement to disclose information. These limits will be discussed in the informed-consent process.

Crisis and emergency boundaries

This website, consultation form, email, phone/text contact, and site chat are not monitored for emergencies or urgent mental health needs. They are not a substitute for crisis intervention or emergency care.

If you or someone else may be in immediate danger, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. For urgent mental health support, contact a local crisis service in your area.
